Previously, the school in Los Toyos had an infrastructure in bad condition and did not have the basic requirements that an average center of education needs. In addition, it was located in front of a high traffic road. Most of the children who attended school crossed the road every day, endangering their lives and some children had lost their lives. For these reasons SCW in cooperation with the municipality and local community formed a partnership to build a new basic education center in Los Toyos.

The community identified a beautiful site with a stream running through it that was large enough for the school and was not in an area prone to flooding. Due to steep slopes, the land had to be terraced for different levels of classrooms and toilet facilities. Ramps have been provided to each level in compliance with USA standards. Toilet facilities are also accessible with running water for handwashing and flushable toilets.

The buildings have been designed to take advantage of natural illumination and ventilation. Large openings are protected by the large overhang over the front walkway. High windows on the opposite wall relieve hot air and induce cross ventilation for student comfort.

Internal spaces provide for adequate space for tables and chairs, allowing students to work on projects in groups. Exterior spaces include play spaces on each level.

This project was partially funded by the Kazma Family Foundation.
